Dumanjug's Dynamic Beauty: Hulyo 2013

Dumanjug is a 4th class municipality situated in the southwestern coast of Cebu and is about 74 kilometers from Cebu City. Legend states that a very brave, colorful chieftain attained fame because of his very loud and booming voice that can even reach some far-flung places surrounding the village. In memory of this local leader, village was called “Dumahunog,”which then eventually evolved to Dumanjug.

It is one of the prime producers and transshipment points of livestock products in Southwestern Cebu since it is a gateway to and from the Southeastern part of Negros Oriental.


Dumanjug Municipal Hall

Formerly known as the old Municipal Hall of Dumanjug. This edifice was refurbished and was transformed into a world-class office building. All rooms in the New Executive building are air-conditioned.

Saint Francis of Assisi Church

                   Dumanjug church is probably the most handsome of the 19th century churches in western Cebu. Made of finely cut coral, its hews closer to the neoclassical idiom for the sedate and chaste simplicity of its decorative elements. The bell tower to one side of the church has a dodecagonal plan, usual for colonial churches. Although made of three stories the floors are unusually high; this is a general characteristic of the church. The engaged pilasters only add to the general sense of height. The facade's lofty elevation is broken only by double pediment.

                  Established as a parish on 28 March 1854, Dumanjug had as patron Saint Francis of Assisi. It was formerly a visita of Barili. Redondo (1886, 163) describes the Borbon church made of rubble and of new construction, measuring 40.5 fathoms long, 8 fathoms and two palmos wide and 7 fathoms and one palmo tall. The church was cruciform, roofed with tile and bell tower under construction.

                 As written on the Historical Marker, this old structure was completed in 1864, as engraved at the main entrance. Its construction started in circa 1854, when the Dumanjug Mission Post was elevated into a parish.

                The work was commissioned by the Spanish Bishop Romualdo Jimeno, O. P. and was undertaken by the pioneerring Pilipino Secular Priest, Rev. Fr. Matias Cabrera and Doroteo Godinez, with the freelabor support of the early natives.

                 The basic materials used are sea corals stone, limestone and Balayong (native black wood) which were abundant in the area then.

                 It is interesting to note that this is one of the few old church structures in Cebu and probably in the whole Philippines, which was designed, executed, supervised and completed by Filipinos themselves.

                 The year 2004 marks the 150th Founding Anniversary of the parish with St. Francis of Assisi as the titular.


Dumanjug Town Plaza

It's a nice place where young or old ones spend their leisure time. Its playground has seesaw, swings and slides, which is available for everybody who wishes to play and have a total enjoyment. Within the vicinity of the plaza are the small stores that sell affordable refreshments.

Agora Complex

It serves as the public market of Dumanjug. Every Sunday merchants from different places trade their goods and services in here.

Gaisano Grand Dumanjug

Aside from sports and other social functions, big department store in the metropolitan area is there.

This enticing natural wonder nestles in Barangay Tubod-Duguan, approximately 3-4kms from the town proper.

Century Old Houses

It is one of the tourist attractions in town. These century old houses are located in a quiet countryside setting.

FESTIVAL

Sinanggiyaw Festival emphasize through the parade of harvesting and showing agricultural products such as rice, corn, coconut, camote and banana in their colorful costumes. In their street dancing it focused on three aspects that includes planting, harvesting, thanksgiving. Sinanggiyaw came from the words "sinanggi" which is harvest and "sayaw" called dance. BISNOK FESTIVAL

BISNOK which means "Bisayang Manok" (grilled chicken) is the famous delicacy that the town of Dumanjug is known for When we say inasal Bisayang Manok, you cannot find it in a famous supermarket, Bar B Q haus, or any establishments but only the town of Dumanjug produces the delicious Inasal Bisayang Manok.The word Bisaya as generic term is used as modifier which means what is local to Cebu or indigenious to Cebuanos like bisaya nga pan, bisayang utan, etc. “Manok” refers to the chicken raised by the residents in the community.BISNOK is coinage term, a word blend of Bisayang Manok. The positive characteristic of the Bisayang Manok (Local Chicken) is happy, friendly, and resourceful for their foods and have closer relationship with each other. Some of these characteristics have significance to the people of Dumanjug.It is celebrated every July.BISNOK dance is mimetic of how a native chicken is grilled. The dance steps are patterned after these four basic steps: Kakha- tuka in the dance, is the part where dancers mime the chickens’ way of searching /catching food for themselves. The so-called kakha-tuka. Birig is a replication on how a male chicken courts. A variation of the chicken polka step. Himulbul is a step where the step suggests how to dress a chicken Dabdab is where the dancers portrayed the step when the chicken is put to grill.

Other attractions of the town are its century old houses located in its quiet countryside setting. The Town Plaza is also a good place to spend one's leisure time. It has a playground for children and small stores within the vicinity that sell affordable refreshments.
